Louisiana Bayous and Plantations

Day 6: Gulf Shores, AL → Schriever, LA.

I decided to bypass New Orleans, which was hard as I’ve always wanted to go there.  And then for the most part, I continued to avoid cities for three reasons:

  • We were still in a pandemic with most of the population unvaccinated… who needs crowds or wants to be indoors?
  • Exploring would be really limited with Zeke.  Even if it was cool enough to leave him in the van, would he be safe?
  • Time was limited… I wanted to explore the hard-to-get-to spots.  If I could fly into a place for a long weekend, why not save it for another time?

So we set our sights on Schriever, LA and Ardoyne Plantation, where the sixth generation of a family lives.  While it looks like they are closed now, they were welcoming Harvest Hosts guests last March.  It was a lovely place to park and rest under the beautiful live oak and Magnolia trees. Picture perfect. Zeke even had his first introduction to Peacocks.

We went out in search of local food and found Cajun Critters Seafood for some authentic cuisine to go in nearby Houma, LA.

This area of the Gulf coast was really poor, with abandoned businesses and the signs of storms that have ravaged the landscape and communities.
