Day 8: Anahuac, TX → Magnolia Beach, TX.
The next drive was uneventful. We headed straight to Magnolia Beach, TX, about three hours further along the coast. I’d heard about this beach when watching #vanlife videos. It’s a sleepy little town, with a beach on a bay off the gulf where you can free camp right on the beach. The compact shells provide a good hard surface to drive on. It wasn’t terribly crowded when we were there, but I gather it can turn into a huge party. We spent two quiet days and nights here, reading and taking walks on the beach. It was a great little break after a week of moving and doing.
There’s not much in this area, so if you ever go, bring in provisions. If you want to have a fire on the beach, they require some kind of container for the fire. Folks had all sorts of easy solutions. I did find a simple place to eat on the water down at the Indianola Fishing Marina. Families were fishing right off the dock. Zeke was in heaven saying hello to everyone.
I don’t have many regrets about the trip, but I do wish I had asked to take portraits of the woman living in a pickup truck with her three pet chickens. She’d let them roam free when she was around, or cage them under the truck if she was busy. It was a fabulous sight.
