Colorful Port of Horta

With the necessary shift in the schedule to accommodate the whale watching rebooking, we had only a short window to visit Faial Island.  It’s a quick ferry ride from Madalena to Horta.  (Times are limited and not entirely convenient off-season, so be sure to check the schedule.  It takes off on-time, even a little early sometimes, and parking can be tricky on the Madalena side, so get there early!)

We decided to just check out the village and port of Horta and have lunch at Peter’s Cafe.  Horta is a famous port for yachts traveling across the Atlantic and around the world and a meeting spot for international yachting events.  Pete’s Cafe is a favorite spot for crews, and we weren’t disappointed by the charm and history of the place.  The schooner Elena was the largest docked, and the crew was gathered for a meal and drinks. It is a colorful port, with a long tradition of crew’s leaving there mark to commemorate docking there.  It is a stunning display.
